Answer:

Nicotinamide riboside (sold as Niagen and Niacel) is a form of vitamin B3 (niacin) that has been promoted as having anti-aging effects, such as boosting energy, increasing physical performance, improving cognitive function, and improving cholesterol levels — without causing flushing. In addition, it has been promoted for raising levels of NAD+ (needed for energy production in cells) that supposedly declines with age. However, the evidence for these uses appears to be very preliminary and may be theoretically incorrect, as discussed in the "Niacin" section of the B Vitamin Supplements Review. In fact, the maker of Niagen has been challenged over some of its claims. There is also theoretical concern that compounds that raise NAD+ levels could also stimulate the growth of existing cancers.

Like supplements containing Niagen and Niacel, the supplement Basis (Elysium Health) includes 250 mg of nicotinamide riboside per recommended daily serving (typically two capsules) but also contains 50 mg of pterostilbene. Details about our laboratory tests of Basis and a clinical study investigating the effects of this supplement can be found, respectively, in the "What CL Found" and "Niacin" sections of the B Vitamin Supplements Review >>
