Heavy Metals Found in Some Ayurvedic Medicines

The December 15, 2004 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that a study of Ayurvedic herbal medicine products sold around the Boston area showed one of five products to be contaminated with one or more heavy metals (mercury and arsenic). Seventy products were purchased from Indian and South Asian grocery stores or markets. Fourteen of these products, if taken as recommended by the manufacturers, could result in heavy metal intakes above published regulatory standards. The authors of the study suggest that users of Ayurvedic medicine may be at risk for heavy metal toxicity
