Zinc supplements shorten colds and reduce the progression of advanced macular degeneration, among other uses. But ConsumerLab.com found that not all supplements are free of contamination and provide a dosage that has been proven effective.

In fact, among four zinc lozenges, only one provided the dosage proven to reduce the duration and severity of a cold. Two lozenges contained doses that were too small and another suggested dosing that was too infrequent.

Specific formulations of zinc with anti-oxidants can improve advanced macular degeneration. ConsumerLab.com identified two supplements that provided the effective formulation.

Zinc supplementation may be also useful in other conditions including acne, depression, and anorexia nervosa, as well as in preventing and treating zinc deficiency. ConsumerLab.com found that most general zinc supplements met quality standards, but one was contaminated with lead.
