Question:
Are there any supplements I should avoid when taking Valium or Xanax?

Answer:
Diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), lorazepam (Ativan) and other benzodiazepine drugs to treat anxiety and insomnia can be affected by taking certain supplements. For example, some supplements can increase the sedative effects or the risk of depression or impairment associated with these drugs.

Supplements like multivitamins may also contain added ingredients, like citrus bioflavonoids, which can potentially increase the effects of these drugs.

Grapefruit juice may also increase the effects of benzodiazepines and should be avoided.

On the other hand, certain supplements may be beneficial for people taking benzodiazepines.

These interactions are explained in the Benzodiazepines article, which is part of the extensive Drug Interactions section of our website (where you can look up interaction for other drugs you may be taking).

Some side effects of benzodiapepines may increase when used with melatonin.
