Resveratrol supplements have been popular since 2006, when studies in animals showed "life-extending" and "endurance-enhancing" effects, among other potential benefits. Although such dramatic effects have not been demonstrated in people, other potential uses are being explored relating to age-related macular degeneration, cardiovascular health, diabetes, and memory. More than $40 million worth of resveratrol-containing supplements are purchased in the U.S. each year, according to Nutrition Business Journal. ConsumerLab.com recently purchased and tested many of the most popular resveratrol supplements to see whether they contained their expected amounts of resveratrol. It also reviewed the clinical evidence regarding resveratrol's use for different conditions and its potential side effects.
The tests revealed that one supplement contained just 11.8% of the resveratrol that might be expected from the label. However, ConsumerLab.com found that most supplements contained their claimed amounts of resveratrol. Among the products which passed testing (including seven products tested through CL's voluntary Quality Certification Program
), ConsumerLab.com identified three products as its Top Picks
for providing high-quality resveratrol for just 10 cents or less per 100 mg, compared to as much as $1.50 for some other products.
The test results and product ratings are now available in ConsumerLab.com's Resveratrol Supplements Review
is now available online at https://www.consumerlab.com/reviews/Resveratrol_Review/Resveratrol_Red_Wine/.
The report summarizes the clinical evidence regarding the use of resveratrol, dosage, what to look for on labels, safety and potential drug interactions.
