On March 9, 2020, the FDA and FTC announced they have issued joint warning letters to seven companies for selling products such as essential oils, teas and colloidal silver with unsupported claims that they can treat coronavirus (COVID-19).

The agencies emphasized that there are currently no approved treatments for the virus stating: "There currently are no vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges or other prescription or over-the-counter products available to treat or cure coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Companies that received a warning letter include the following (use the links below to read the full warning letter):
Products were promoted with statements such as "Essential Oils to Protect Against Coronavirus..." and "Even though there are no vaccines available to combat these coronaviruses, there is a home remedy of Colloidal Silver 100 ppm that has worked effectively on coronaviruses successfully for the last 123 years."

The chairman of the FTC, Joe Simons, commented, "There already is a high level of anxiety over the potential spread of coronavirus. What we don't need in this situation are companies preying on consumers by promoting products with fraudulent prevention and treatment claims. These warning letters are just the first step. We're prepared to take enforcement actions against companies that continue to market this type of scam."

The agencies instructed the companies to send an email to COVID-19-Task-Force-CDER@fda.hhs.gov within 48 hours of reciept of the warning, describing the specific steps they have taken to correct these violations.
