Liver Toxicity with Kava
As announced in a December 19, 2001 letter to healthcare professionals, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating whether the use of dietary supplements containing kava (also known as kava kava or Piper methysticum) is associated with liver toxicity. Products containing herbal extracts of kava have been recently implicated in cases of serious liver toxicity in Germany and Switzerland. (Note: This information does not relate in any way to an instant coffee brand known as KAVA).
