Government Finds Fraud in Personalized Supplements Sold with Genetic Tests

On July 22, 2010, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported that its investigators found genetic tests sold directly to consumers to yield misleading and useless information. Ten of the 15 companies investigated were found to engage in some form of fraudulent, deceptive, or otherwise questionable marketing practices. At least four companies claimed that a consumer’s DNA could be used to create personalized supplements (one costing $145 per month). Investigators found that such supplements were sometimes touted as cures, which government experts considered to be lies, noting that “there is no scientific basis for claiming that supplements can be customized to DNA.”
