How Products were Selected: Products were selected to represent the majority of those commonly sold and/or available nationally in the U.S. ConsumerLab.com purchased products on the open market through retail stores, on-line retailers, catalogues, or multi-level marketing companies. Products were not accepted directly from manufacturers.
Testing Methods: Products were tested for their claimed amount of MSM and for DMSO. Analysis for MSM and DMSO was performed using a Gas Chromatography (GC) method in an independent laboratory. Products not having passing levels of MSM or DMSO were then re-tested in a second independent laboratory using a comparable GC method.
The identities of the products were not disclosed to the laboratories performing the testing.
Passing Score: *
To achieve a "Pass" in the testing, a product had to contain 100% of its labeled amount of MSM and no more than 125% of this amount, and had to contain less than 0.05% DMSO (%wt/wt).
For a product to fail, confirmation of a failing result on at least one of the parameters above was required on repeat testing in a second independent laboratory.
