Weight loss supplements contain an array of ingredients -- some supported by clinical evidence and some not. What's more, the quantity and quality of these ingredients may vary widely across brands. To make sense of it all, ConsumerLab.com reviewed and summarized the evidence behind each of the common weight loss ingredients and many popular formulas. Just as important, we tested products containing green tea or 7-keto DHEA -- two of the ingredients with clinical evidence behind them.
What did we find? Two 7-keto DHEA supplements met our quality requirements. We also found a product that provided the amount of EGCG (from green tea) associated with weight loss. However, we discovered in our tests that two weight loss supplements were missing one-third to one-quarter of the listed green tea; two others were contaminated with a carcinogenic form of chromium; and the label on a fifth highly-promoted supplement violated several FDA regulations.
We also tested weight loss formulas containing proprietary blends of stimulant ingredients, including teas, Yerba maté, and added caffeine. As claimed, several products delivered caffeine equivalent 15 cans of cola! Some also included ingredients like bitter orange and yohimbe which, as we explain in the research report on weight loss supplements, should give you pause.
