WHITE PLAINS, NY — April 16, 2002 — ConsumerLab.com announced today that it found no hard evidence to suggest that current dietary supplements marketed for breast enhancement are effective. Its findings appear in a Review Article on its site, in which scientific literature and product information were analyzed. Unlike ConsumerLab.com's typical Product Reviews in which supplements and nutrition products are subjected to laboratory testing, ConsumerLab.com found no basis to proceed with testing of breast enhancement products as none could be recommended.
The review found no well-controlled clinical studies and no sound theoretical basis for any of twenty ingredients often appearing in such products to be effective. For example, there is no reason to believe that estrogenic herbs (including soy, red clover, fennel, and hops) should increase breast size in young women; if anything, they could theoretically decrease it (although they most likely are too weak to have any effect at all).
"This review caused us to depart from our traditional testing of products because no product of which we aware would merit our approval even if it contained what it claimed," said Tod Cooperman, M.D., ConsumerLab.com's President.
