White Plains, NY, December 09, 2025 — Beetroot products are promoted for their naturally occurring nitrate, which can relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. Few products, however, list nitrate levels. So, ConsumerLab purchased and tested popular beetroot juices, powders, and chews, finding large amounts of nitrate in some but shockingly little in others.
Key Findings:
- ConsumerLab found that nitrate varied more than 200-fold across juices, powders, and chews — from just 2.2 mg per serving to 495.6 mg per serving. Clinical trials have typically used 300 mg to 600 mg of nitrate per day.
- One popular product claimed equivalency to three whole beets but contained less than 4% of the nitrate one might expect.
- A beetroot chew contained so little nitrate that one would need to eat more than 100 to get the nitrate in a glass of beetroot juice – and each chew had 20 Calories.
- The cost to get 100 mg of nitrate from a product ranged from 30 cents to more than $23. In general, beetroot powders were the least expensive way to get nitrate.
Fortunately, none of the tested products exceeded CL’s strict limits for toxic heavy metals, including lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury. However, one product, a beetroot juice, came close to CL’s limit for lead, suggesting it may be best to limit consumption
ConsumerLab’s Top Picks
ConsumerLab selected Top Picks for beetroot products that were Approved in testing and offered substantial amounts of nitrate with the least lead contamination and at a good value.
