Think Expensive NAC Is Better? ConsumerLab Tests Say Otherwise

White Plains, NY, April 15, 2026 — NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) supplements are widely marketed for “detoxification,” immune support, and respiratory health, as NAC is converted in the body into the antioxidant glutathione. ConsumerLab recently put NAC supplements to the test, checking their quality and reviewing the science behind NAC.

Key Findings:

  • Cost Not an Indicator of Quality: The cost to obtain a 600-mg dose ranged from just 6 cents to more than 50 cents, with no meaningful difference in quality.
  • No Advantage to “Free Form” Claims: NAC is inherently in “free form,” so products highlighting this feature offer no added benefit.
  • Limited Evidence: General claims of "liver protection" and "detoxification" are not well established. It may help with flu, chronic bronchitis, and COPD symptoms, but the evidence is weak for its purported ability to thin mucus during a cold and for general claims of "immune support." Very preliminary studies suggest benefits for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), Sjogren's syndrome, schizophrenia, compulsive behavior, and anti-aging.
