(Date Posted: 7/29/2016)

On July 28, 2016, Gel Spice, Inc. issued a voluntary recall one lot of Fresh Finds Ground Turmeric Powder because it was found to contain elevated levels of lead.

Exposure to lead, even at low levels, is associated with neurological impairment, and in children, learning disabilities and lower IQ scores. Lead can accumulate in the body over time. Symptoms of lead toxicity include abdominal pain, headache, changes in blood pressure, dizziness, kidney and brain damage.

Recalled Fresh Finds Ground Turmeric was distributed at Big Lots Stores throughout the United States. It is packaged in 3.75 oz. PET jars and can be identified by the following:

  • UPC code: 81026-01230
  • Best By codes: B/B 03/08/19 and B/B 05/18/19

Consumers who have purchased this product should not use it and should discard it. People concerned about blood lead levels should contact their physician or health clinic to ask about testing.

NOTE: ConsumerLab.com has reported in lead in turmeric powders in the past and continually tests turmeric supplements, as well as spices, for lead and other heavy metals. For CL's most recent tests see the ConsumerLab.com's Turmeric and Curcumin Supplements and Spices Review.
