On June 22, 2020, the FTC announced it is mailing 187,425 checks totaling more than $8.7 million to consumers who signed up online for "risk-free trial offers" for products such as skin creams and dietary supplements, but were then charged full price and enrolled in expensive subscription plans without their knowledge. The refunds are being distributed as part of a May, 2019 settlement with Triangle Media Corporation and other defendants of charges of deceptive risk-free trials.
The FTC noted that checks will begin being mailed out today, and that recipients should deposit or cash checks within 60 days. It also reminded consumers that the FTC never requires people to pay money or provide account information to cash refund checks. The average check amount is $47.
