Nutrition Drink Recalled Due To Bacterial Contamination

On February 21, 2013, Sequel Naturals Ltd. issued a voluntary recall of three lots of Vega One French Vanilla nutritional shake due to bacterial contamination.

Recalled lots include:

Vega One French Vanilla (414 g), Lot# 42245900, Expiration Date July 2014

Vega One French Vanilla (827 g), Lot# 42245800, Expiration Date July 2014

Vega One French Vanilla (37.6 g), Lot# 2308000, Expiration Date July 2014

Tests conducted by Health Canada confirmed the presence of Klebsiella oxytoca, Citrobacter braakii, Cronobacter sakazakii group, Enterobacter cloacae complex, Acinetobacter baumannii, Acinetobacter haemolyticus and Leclercia adecarboxylata in these products.

While these bacteria do not typically pose a risk to healthy individuals, Klebsiella oxytoca can cause illness such as infection of the lower intestine, cramps and watery, bloody diarrhea, lung infections and urinary tract infections in individuals with a compromised immune system. It may also cause infections of the skin, soft tissues, organs, or blood poisoning if introduced into a wound.

Vega One French Vanilla is a plant-based nutritional shake that contains protein and a blend of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. It is sold throughout Canada and the U.S. in retail stores and over the internet.
