More Generic Versions of Heart Medication Recalled

As reported in the New York Times on June 24, 2014, certain lots of the blood pressure medication metoprolol succinate extended-release have recently been recalled. The recalling manufacturers are the Indian companies Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Wockhardt. The products are generic versions of brand name Toprol XL.

ConsumerLab.com first drew attention to potential problems with generic versions of Toprol XL in its Drug Investigation in March 2008, after which versions of the drug from ETHEX/KV and EON/Sandoz were recalled.

As noted in a blog post today by ConsumerLab.com's sister company, PharmacyChecker.com, brand name Toprol XL from AstraZeneca remains available for sale in the U.S. and is also available, at much lower cost, from online pharmacies which ship the product from licensed pharmacies in other countries. Interestingly, even brand name Toprol XL is manufactured for AstraZeneca in India.
