Supplements Recalled Years Ago Remain on the Market, Still Contain Hidden Drugs
Of 274 supplements recalled between 2009 and 2012, researchers found 27 were available for purchase online as late as 2013. Among these, approximately 67% were found to contain one or more pharmaceutical drugs, typically the same drug they contained at the time of recall, and in some cases, additional drugs.
Eighty-five percent of the sports enhancement supplements tested by the researchers were still adulterated with drugs like anabolic steroids (see Warnings for supplements found to contain steroids). Sixty-seven percent of the weight loss supplements tested contained drugs such as the banned weight loss drug sibutramine or the prescription antidepressant fluoxetine (see Warnings for supplements found to contain sibutramine or fluoxetine). Twenty percent of the sexual enhancement supplements contained prescription medications like sildenafil (see Warnings for supplements found to contain sildenafil or similar drugs).
