Herbal Laxative and "Detox" Kit Containing High Levels of Lead and/or Arsenic Recalled in Canada

On April 15, 2015, Health Canada (the Canadian equivalent of the U.S. FDA) announced that St. Francis Herb Farm Inc. is voluntarily recalling the herbal laxative supplement Bulklax V and the "detox" supplement All Seasons Detox Kit because they were found to contain high levels of lead and/or arsenic.

These products were sold in Canada but may be available to consumers in the U.S. through online sales. In Canada, the two products can be identified by the following:

  • Bulklax V (St. Francis Herb Farm Inc.), NPN: 80048371, Expiration Date: 2017 April. This product was found to contain lead at over 7 times the acceptable limit and arsenic at over twice the acceptable limit.
  • All Seasons Detox Kit (St. Francis Herb Farm Inc.), NPN: 80054551, Expiration Date: 2017 March. This product was found to contain lead at over twice the acceptable limit.

Exposure to excessive amounts of lead and arsenic can have serious adverse effects. Symptoms of lead toxicity include abdominal pain, headache, changes in blood pressure, dizziness, kidney and brain damage. Arsenic may cause stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramping, tingling and loss of movement.
