Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. In women who are pregnant, Listeria monocytogenes can cause miscarriage and stillbirths. Infection with Listeria monocytogenes can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
On June 2, 2016, certain Clif Bars were recalled due to the same potential for contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
