Flaxseed Salmonella Risk Prompts Recall

Update: (2/4/20) This recall has been expanded to include additional Nopalina flaxseed products, which are highlighted below.

On January 23, 2020, the FDA warned consumers not to use specific lots of Nopalina Flax Seed Fiber powder and Nopalina Flax Seed Fiber capsules manufactured by Salud Natural Entrepreneur, Inc., because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

FDA analysis of senna leaves powder, an ingredient used in these products, found the powder tested positive for three types of Salmonella (Salmonella Gaminara, Salmonella Kentucky, and Salmonella Oranienburg).

Salmonella is an organism that has been linked to fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly adults, and people with weakened immune systems. In healthy adults, Salmonella can produce fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
