Hopewell Essential Oils Warned for Coronavirus Claims
On April 27, 2020, the FDA issued a warning letter to Hopewell Essential Oils for selling its essential oils with unsupported claims that they can treat coronavirus (COVID-19).
The company was promoting essential oils with statements such as "The Coronavirus presents pneumonia-like symptoms, making it difficult to breathe. For respiratory issues, my favorite blends are Lung Support and Respiratory Relief," and "If I became ill with a respiratory virus, I'd diffuse one of these, but if I didn't have a diffuser, I'd get an inexpensive surgical or dust mask. . . and put a couple of drops of essential oil onto the mask. I'd wear it. . .to inhale the essential oils. . . Inhaling essential oils is an excellent way to get the oils into the bloodstream, thus I'd figure out some way for those ill to inhale them frequently."
The FDA has previously stated: "There currently are no vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges or other prescription or over-the-counter products available to treat or cure coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)."
The agency instructed the companies to send an email to COVID-19-Task-Force-CDER@fda.hhs.gov within 48 hours of receipt of the warning, describing the specific steps they have taken to correct these violations.
