Two More Hand Sanitizers That May Contain Toxic Ingredient Recalled
Update: (8/10/20) Soluciones Cosméticas has recalled additional products that may contain methanol, as listed in red below.
On July 14, 2020, two more companies recalled hand sanitizers because they may contain methanol, which is toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested:
Bersih Hand Sanitizer Gel Fragrance Free (Soluciones Cosméticas) was distributed nationwide to wholesale distributors and retailers. It is packaged in 16.9-ounce clear, plastic bottles with blue or green tops and can be identified by the UPC Codes 816822026667 and 7503007103178 and lot numbers from 0100K01 to 0148K01. Consumers who have these products should immediately stop using them and return them to the place of purchase.
bio aaa Advance Hand Sanitizer (AAA Cosmética, S.A. de C.V.) was distributed nationwide. It is packaged in 480 mL plastic bottles and can be identified by the expiration date of April 2022 and lot numbers 20DF9001 through 20DF9022. Consumers who have these products should immediately stop using them and mail the product/s to AAA Cosmetica for a refund at: I.S.C. Forwarder Inc. 8400 San Lorenzo, Laredo, Texas 78045.
Methanol, sometimes called wood alcohol, is poisonous. Methanol exposure through the skin or by ingestion can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. The agency warned that consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol to "seek immediate treatment, which is critical for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning."
The recalls came days after the FDA warned consumers not to use forty-six hand sanitizers that may contain methanol.
Hand sanitizer containing at least 60% ethyl alcohol is recommended by the CDC for disinfecting hands when soap and water are not available, and is generally considered safe when used as directed. See the CDC's website for more information about using hand sanitizer.
