Zanilast+gel Hand Sanitizer Recalled

On August 26, 2020, Nanomateriales, SA de CV recalled Zanilast+gel because it may contain 1-propanol, which is toxic when ingested.

The FDA first warned consumers about the possible presence of 1-propanol in certain hand sanitizers on August 12 and has continued to update consumers about potentially-affected products and recalls.

Recalled Zanilast+gel (see images) were distributed in California, New York, and New Jersey and come in plastic bottles. They can be further identified by the following information:

  • Size: 1L. UPC: 2 000000 531151. NDC: 69912-008-01
  • Size: 25L. UPC: 2 000000 531151. NDC: 69912-006-01
  • Size: 1 gallon. UPC: 2 000000 531144. NDC: 69912-008-02

1-propanol is poisonous when ingested and can result in confusion, decreased consciousness, slowed pulse and breathing, and death. The FDA warned consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing 1-propanol and are experiencing symptoms to "seek immediate care for treatment of toxic effects of 1-propanol poisoning."

All individuals who have recalled Nanomateriales, SA de CV hand sanitizer should immediately stop using it and should return it to the place of purchase.

1-propanol is a different form of alcohol than ethyl alcohol. Hand sanitizer containing at least 60% ethyl alcohol is recommended by the CDC for disinfecting hands when soap and water are not available, and is generally considered safe when used as directed. See the CDC's website for more information about using hand sanitizer.
