Mislabeled Open Book Extracts Hand Sanitizers Recalled

On August 29, 2020, Open Book Extracts recalled Always Be Clean Hand Sanitizer and Just Hand Sanitizer because, according to the product labels, they contain methanol, which is toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested.

According to the recall, Open Book Extracts has verified through a third-party lab that the hand sanitizers do not contain reportable levels of methanol.

The products were distributed nationwide and can be identified by the following information:
  • Product: Always Be Clean Hand Sanitizer. Sizes: single snaps, 100 count, 25 count. NDCs: 75091-2020-1, 75091-2020-2, 75091-2020-3. UPCs: 375091202016, 375091202023, 375091202030. Lot: ES8-200514

Methanol, sometimes called wood alcohol, is poisonous. Methanol exposure through the skin or by ingestion can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. The agency warned that consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol to "seek immediate treatment, which is critical for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning."

All individuals who have recalled Open Book Extracts hand sanitizer should immediately stop using it and return it to the place of purchase.

Methanol is a different form of alcohol than ethyl alcohol. Hand sanitizer containing at least 60% ethyl alcohol is recommended by the CDC for disinfecting hands when soap and water are not available, and is generally considered safe when used as directed. See the CDC's website for more information about using hand sanitizer.
