Seller of Elderberry and Honey Products Warned for COVID-19 Claims
On October 23, 2020, the FDA issued a warning letter to Beepothecary LLC for selling the products BEEHive Delight, BEEbread, and Elderberry, Honey & Propolis Syrup with unsupported claims that they can treat coronavirus (COVID-19).
Bee products were promoted with statements such as "AMAZING PROPOLIS!... another research paper that was just submitted for publication on the use of propolis against Covid 19" and "Elderberry, honey an [sic] Propolis syrup ready for you to maintain a healthy immunity! Just a tablespoon sip… is all it takes... BEEpothecary.us #coronavirus #antivirus"
The FDA has previously stated: "There currently are no vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges or other prescription or over-the-counter products available to treat or cure coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)."
The agency instructed the company to send an email to COVID-19-Task-Force-CDER@fda.hhs.gov within 48 hours of receipt of the warning, describing the specific steps it has taken to correct these violations.
