Problems With Supplements on Amazon

More than 50% of 30 top-listed immune support supplements purchased on Amazon.com in May of last year were found to list ingredients that could not be found in them with testing, according to a recent report (Crawford, JAMA Network Open, 2022). It is important to note that none of the selected products had a third-party certification seal from ConsumerLab.com or other third-party.

Ingredients listed on labels but missing in 17 products included mainly plant extracts, while two products were missing vitamin B12 and folate. Nine of these products had substances detected that were not on product labels including three supplements labeled as elderberry that were discovered to contain black rice seed. One product was listed as "licorice root powder (deglycerrhizinated)" but actually contained glycyrrhizin (a compound that can cause increases in blood pressure and other adverse effects).

Identifies of products were not given.
