On May 7, 2026, George J. Howe Co. recalled 13,619 pounds of sunflower seeds because the products may contain undeclared tree nuts, specifically cashews.

People who are allergic or severely sensitive to tree nuts may be at risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Recalled George J. Howe Co. sunflower seeds were distributed in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin. They were sold at grocery stores including Foodland, Giant Eagle, Piggly Wiggly, ShopRite, Shop ’n Save, Walmart, and independent grocers, as well as through foodservice accounts, specialty retailers, concession and airport operators, and institutional customers. They can be identified by the following:

  • Best By dates: 08/28/2026, 09/18/2026, 10/01/2026, 10/09/2026, 11/18/2026, and 12/12/2026

  • Best By dates: 09/24/2026, 10/30/2026, 11/18/2026, and 12/11/2026
• Sunflower Seeds, roasted and salted

  • Best By dates: 7/22/2026 and 09/05/2026

All recalled products state that they were packaged in a facility that also processes peanuts, tree nuts, milk products, soy, wheat, and eggs. However, the products did not declare that they may contain cashews.

Consumers who have purchased the affected sunflower seeds are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
