Our Members Asked:
What are the health benefits of andrographis? Can it treat colds, help with joint pain, or other conditions, and is it safe?

Answer:
Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata), sometimes referred to as "Indian echinacea," or "chiretta," is a plant native to India and Sri Lanka traditionally used to help prevent and treat colds and other respiratory infections, as well as to sooth digestive ailments and reduce joint aches and pains. It is most commonly taken as an extract, although occasionally, crushed whole leaves have been used.
Laboratory studies have shown compounds in andrographis, called andrographolides, have antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Andrographis extract has been investigated in mostly small and short-term clinical studies for respiratory infections (including colds and COVID-19), osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, and cancer, with some studies suggesting possible evidence of benefit for reducing symptoms of some, but not all, of these conditions.
Taken at recommended dosages, andrographis is generally well-tolerated. Side effects are typically mild and include heartburn, diarrhea, headache, and skin rash. Rarely, elevated liver enzymes and anaphylactic reactions have also been reported.

September 07, 2021I've taken Andrographis, in tincture and dry form, almost daily for 4 years for Lyme/Bart/co-infections and not only does it help with symptoms but per frequent lab work there are no issues with liver/kidney, etc. I also give it to my dog to try and prevent tick borne diseases. He did get Anaplasmosis while on it but never showed symptoms and he still doesn't have Lyme despite pulling hundreds of various species of ticks off him for years.
