Should I be concerned about phytic acid in oat cereals? I've heard that it can be harmful, but also that it can have health benefits.
Phytic acid occurs naturally in grains such as oats and is an energy source for sprouting grain seeds. Although it can inhibit the absorption of minerals, this shouldn't be a problem if you maintain a well-balanced diet. Interestingly, phytic acid is also sold as a supplement (as inositol hexaphosphate or IP6) due to preliminary evidence of benefits.
