ConsumerLab Tests Reveal the Best Chia Seeds – Avoid Mold

White Plains, NY, July 01, 2026 — Chia seeds are rich in fiber, healthful fats, protein, and minerals, but new tests by ConsumerLab reveal that some popular chia products are contaminated with mold.

Key Findings:

  • Mold was a problem: Two out of 10 popular chia seed products selected, purchased, and tested by ConsumerLab were contaminated with mold, with one product containing 8 times the acceptable limit. Levels above this limit indicate possible spoilage from poor storage conditions or contamination during processing. The mold was not visible, so consumers would likely not be aware of the issue. The results were confirmed in a second, independent laboratory. There was no detectable contamination with Salmonella or E. coli.

  • Nutrition labels were accurate: All products contained their listed protein, fiber, and fat within a reasonable margin. Surprisingly, one product contained about 50% more protein than claimed.

  • Heavy metals were low in most products: Levels of toxic heavy metals — lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury — were generally low. However, one product contained two to three times as much lead as any other product.

  • Ground chia costs considerably more: The cost of a 30-gram serving ranged from 35 cents to $1.66. Ground chia seeds were the most expensive, costing several times as much as some whole-seed products. A potential advantage of ground chia is that it enables greater absorption of the polyunsaturated omega-3 fat, ALA, which is found in the seed.

As explained in the Review, chia seeds are small, edible seeds that are highly nutritious and particularly rich in fiber, which forms an edible gel when the seeds are added to liquid. They are also a good source of healthful oils, particularly the omega-3 fatty acid ALA, as well as a range of minerals and vitamins. The Review also explains what to look for when choosing chia seeds and the best way to prepare and store them. Due to chia seeds’ high fiber content and extreme water-absorbing properties, consuming chia seeds may produce stomach discomfort or pose a choking hazard for some people, although soaking the seeds before consuming may help.
