White Plains, New York, October 2, 2018 — Do joint health supplements with ingredients such as glucosamine, chondroitin, Boswellia, and MSM really relieve joint pain or slow the progression of osteoarthritis? If so, which products are best? To find out, ConsumerLab recently tested popular joint supplements for people and joint supplements for dogs and cats to see whether they contained their claimed amounts of glucosamine, chondroitin and/or MSM, and, in products claiming to contain Boswellia, amounts of the key boswellic acid AKBA. Products were also tested for contamination with heavy metals such as lead and, if tablets, for proper disintegration.

The tests revealed that, most of the supplements contained what they claimed but two supplements for people contained less chondroitin sulfate (which tends to be an expensive ingredient) than claimed. In addition, one pet product contained just three-quarters of its listed glucosamine and chondroitin and another provided so little glucosamine and chondroitin as to possibly have no benefit.

Among the joint health supplements that passed all tests of quality, ConsumerLab selected its Top Picks for People and its Top Picks for Dogs and Cats, identifying those that provide significant doses of ingredients at the best price.

The results of ConsumerLab's tests of joint products for people are available online in the new Joint Health Supplements Review, which covers the following products: 21st Century Glucosamine Chondroitin Triple Strength, Andorra Life Flexi Joint, Bluebonnet Vegetarian Glucosamine MSM, Complementary Prescriptions Joint Support Formula, Cosamin DS for Joint Health, DEVA Glucosamine, Doctor's Best Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM, Dr. Whitaker TriComfort Essentials, Instaflex Advanced, Jamieson Glucosamine Chondroitin, Jarrow Formulas N-A-G, Kirkland Signature Extra Strength Glucosamine Chondroitin, Member's Mark (Sam's Club) Glucosamine Chondroitin, Nature Made Triple Flex, NOW MSM Powder, Osteo Bi-Flex Triple Strength, Schiff Move Free Joint Health Advanced, Shaklee Advanced Joint Health Complex, Solgar No. 7, Swanson Boswellia, The Vitamin Shoppe Glucosamine, USANA Procosa, and Vitacost Synergy Triple Strength Glucosamine & Chondroitin.
