ONLY HALF OF SAM-e SUPPLEMENTS FOUND TO CONTAIN PROPER INGREDIENTS AND LABELING IN CONSUMERLAB.COM TESTING
— PRODUCT REVIEW OF POPULAR ANTI-DEPRESSANT PUBLISHED ONLINE TODAY —
WHITE PLAINS, NY, March 28, 2000 - Among 13 brands of SAM-e dietary supplements (used primarily in treating depression and osteoarthritis) only seven were found to contain labeled amounts of SAM-e (S-adenosyl-methionine). These results were reported today by ConsumerLab.com, which conducts the largest independent analysis of dietary supplements sold in the U.S.
In addition to the low levels of SAM-e found in many of the products, ConsumerLab.com also found that labeling information on several products could lead consumers to expect twice the amount of SAM-e in the product as provided. Specifically, the labeled amount of SAM-e on such products included the weight of other non-active components.
"While many manufacturers are putting out a good SAM-e product, too many others appear to be skimping on ingredient or playing a bait-and-switch game with consumers," said Tod Cooperman, M.D., president of ConsumerLab.com. SAM-e is among the fastest growing supplements in popularity in the U.S.
The list of products that passed ConsumerLab.com's independent testing, as well as more information about the Product Review, are available at www.consumerlab.com and as well as through ConsumerLab.com's new content partner, eNutrition, at www.enutrition.com. To further assist consumers, ConsumerLab.com is licensing its flask-shaped Seal of Approved Quality to manufacturers and distributors to use on products that have passed testing. ConsumerLab.com will periodically re-evaluate these products to ensure their compliance with its standards.
ConsumerLab.com purchased the tested products through retail stores, on-line retailers, and direct sales or multi-level marketing companies. This is the fifth major dietary supplement evaluated by ConsumerLab.com since its launch last November. The next Product Review, to be released in April is of vitamin C products. By year-end, ConsumerLab.com will have tested most of the popular dietary supplement categories sold in the U.S.
