Maker of Eye Health Supplements Warned for Drug Claims

On September 18, 2012, the FDA issued a warning letter to EyeScience Labs, L.L.C. because statements made about the company’s Macular Health Formula, Dry Eye Formula and Diabetic Vision Formula supplements were found to constitute drug claims.

Macular Health Formula contains vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin E, folate, zinc, selenium, lutein, omega-3 powder, bilberry extract, grape seed extract, alpha lipoic acid and L-glutathione. It was promoted for the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration.

Dry Eye Formula contains vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin E, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed oil and lactoferrin. It was promoted for the treatment of dry-eye syndrome.

Diabetic Vision Formula contains vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin D, vitamin E, lutein, alpha lipoic acid and a blend of omega-3 powder, cinnamon bark extract, grape seed extract and bilberry extract. It was promoted for the prevention of diabetic retinopathy. This product was also found to be misbranded due to inadequate directions for use.
