Seller of Mineral and Joint Supplements Warned for Manufacturing Violations and Drug Claims

On July 25, 2014, the FDA issued a warning letter to Mezotrace Corporation following a facility inspection which found the company's products, including Calcium/Magnesium Natural Minerals & Trace Elements, Calcium/Magnesium Natural Minerals & Trace Elements with Vitamin D, and Calcium/Magnesium Powdered Minerals Natural Minerals & Trace Elements, to be adulterated because they were prepared, packed, or held under conditions that violate Current Good Manufacturing Practices for dietary supplements.

These violations include failure to implement quality control operations to ensure quality of the supplements, and failure to establish and follow written procedures for product complaints and returned dietary supplements.

In addition, statements made about these supplements on the Mezotrace website and in promotional material were found to be drug claims. Mezotrace Calcium/Magnesium with Vitamin D, Calcium/Magnesium Chewable, Mezo-G, Calcium/Magnesium Powdered Minerals, and MultiVitamins Balanced Formula were promoted with statements such as, "MEZOTRACE... people who have used it have reported relief from the pain and stiffness associated with arthritic conditions, bursitis, bone spurs and other bone/joint ailments, and it appears to be effective as an aid to more rapid healing from bone and joint injuries and operations."

Mezotrace Joint Formula with MSM and Mezotrace Minerals with Glucosamine, MSM and Vitamin D were promoted with statements such as "to help alleviate the pain associated with stiff joints," and "Glucosamine has been shown in studies to …slow the progression of joint deterioration."
