Gaia Kratom Recalled Due to Salmonella Risk

On June 21, 2018, Gaia Ethnobotanical, LLC issued a recall of 27 kratom products because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism that has been linked to fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly adults, and people with weakened immune systems. In healthy adults, Salmonella can produce fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recalled kratom products were manufactured between March 18, 2018 to March 30, 2018 and were distributed via the internet to the following states: Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia Washington and Wyoming. They were sold in plastic bags bearing Lot No.: 0102031800 and Batch No.: 031800 and can be identified by the following additional information:

Gaia is notifying its customers by e-mail and/or telephone. People who have purchased the recalled products are urged to return them or immediately discard them.

Kratom, also known as Thang, Kakuam, Thom, Ketom, and Biak, is often sold as powdered leaves or extract in loose powder, tea, capsules or liquids, and is promoted for energy, pain relief or to help ease opioid withdrawal. Consumption of kratom has also been associated with adverse effects, including hepatotoxicity, psychosis, seizure, weight loss, insomnia, tachycardia, vomiting, poor concentration, hallucinations, and death, associated with its opioid properties.
