FDA Warns Pure Plant Essentials for Essential Oil Coronavirus Claims
On April 1, 2020, the FDA issued a warning letter to Health Mastery Systems DBA Pure Plant Essentials for selling products with unsupported claims that they can treat coronavirus (COVID-19).
The company was promoting essential oil products with statements such as "RESEARCH ESSENTIAL OILS RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS — SOOTHING SUPPORT FOR CORONA VIRUS SYMPTOMS — RESPIRATORY FORMULA" and "ESSENTIAL OIL RESPIRATORY FORMULA — Soothing Support for Symptoms like Corona Virus."
The FDA emphasized that there are currently no approved treatments for the virus stating: "For COVID-19, no such study is currently known to exist for the products identified above."
The agency instructed the companies to send an email to COVID-19-Task-Force-CDER@fda.hhs.gov within 48 hours of receipt of the warning, describing the specific steps they have taken to correct these violations.
