Seller Indicted for Promoting Silver Product as Coronavirus Cure
On July 28, 2020, Utah resident Gordon Pedersen was indicted by a federal grand jury for posing as a medical doctor to sell an unapproved treatment for coronavirus (COVID-19). According to the indictment, Pedersen promoted and sold silver products as a cure for coronavirus without any evidence that the products could treat or cure the disease. He also falsely posed as a doctor in promotional photos and videos on the internet by wearing a white lab coat and stethoscope.
Pedersen and his two companies, My Doctor Suggests LLC and GP Silver LLC, were ordered by a federal court to cease promotion of the silver product in May, 2020. The product was promoted with baseless statements such as "It has been proven that Alkaline Structured Silver will destroy all forms of viruses, it will protect people from the Coronavirus."
The Department of Justice stated that it "will take swift action to protect consumers from those who would recklessly exploit this public health crisis by offering phony cure-alls for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19" and that "COVID-19 is a dangerous disease, and American consumers must have accurate and reliable information as they make important health decisions."
