Another Toxic Ingredient Found in Hand Sanitizer
On August 12, 2020, the FDA announced that hand sanitizer products manufactured by Harmonic Nature S de RL de MI may contain 1-propanol, which is toxic when ingested.
1-propanol is poisonous when ingested and can result in confusion, decreased consciousness, slowed pulse and breathing, and death. The FDA warned consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing 1-propanol and are experiencing symptoms to "seek immediate care for treatment of toxic effects of 1-propanol poisoning."
All individuals who have affected hand sanitizer should immediately stop using it and should dispose of it in hazardous waste containers. The products should not be flushed or poured down the drain.
1-propanol is a different form of alcohol than ethyl alcohol. Hand sanitizer containing at least 60% ethyl alcohol is recommended by the CDC for disinfecting hands when soap and water are not available, and is generally considered safe when used as directed. See the CDC's website for more information about using hand sanitizer.
Also see the FDA's updates on unsafe hand sanitizers for more information about 1-propanol and methanol contamination.
