Mushroom Supplement Seller Warned for Drug Claims
On December 4, 2020, the FDA issued a warning letter to Desert Alchemist LLC following a review of the company's website, social media, and Etsy.com store (www.etsy.com/shop/DesertAlchemist), which found statements made about the company's products Fortify, Lion's Mane, The Great Work, Mind Ease, Sweet Balance, Happy Heart, Flair Snare, and Cordycepts sinensis double extract to be drug claims.
For example, Fortify was promoted with statements such as "Fortify is an extract made from mushrooms with the best... immuno-modulating, antiviral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties. This is an excellent extract for those people suffer from weak immune systems, hyperactive immune systems, allergic disorders, and is an excellent agent to use as an adjunct therapy to support the immune system during the treatment and recovery of cancer patients."
See ConsumerLab's Reishi Mushroom Supplements Review for tests of related products.
The Great Work was promoted with statements such as "the great work is an extract that is made with a combination of 20 different mushrooms that provide support for... cholesterol control."
See ConsumerLab's Review of Cholesterol-Lowering Supplements (Sterols/Stanols and Policosanol) for tests of related products.
In addition, these products were found to be misbranded because they does not contain adequate directions for safe use, as required by federal regulations.
