FDA Warns Company Selling Supplements with Dangerous Steroid-like Substances

On July 6, 2022, the FDA issued a warning letter to Elite Supplement Center LLC and Elite Supplement Training Facility LLC for selling the following products labeled as containing steroid-like substances known as selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs), which are not permitted in dietary supplements:

  • Ostarine MK-2866
  • Ligandrol LGD 4033
  • Ibutamoren MK-677
  • Testolone Rad140
  • Cardarine GW50156

SARMs, including Ostarine (MK-2866), Testolone (RAD140), Cardarine (GW0156) and others, are steroid-like substances often illegally marketed as dietary supplements or drugs and typically promoted for building lean muscle mass, as they can act as anabolic steroids.

These substances may cause liver toxicity, increased risk of heart attack and stroke, and life-threatening reactions. Research published in the Journal of American Medical Association found that a large proportion of SARMs products do not contain the compounds they claim and/or contain other compounds.

The FDA also found that products on the company website, while stated as “RESEARCH ONLY” and “Not for Human Consumption,” are intended for human use. For example, Ostarine MK-2866 is promoted with statements such as, “known for producing excellent lean muscle gains while helping bone and joint health as well as muscle recovery. This makes it a great choice for body recomposition.”

The company must respond within 15 working days of receipt of the letter outlining steps taken to address any violations.
