Cosequin Distributor Agrees to Pay $11.5 Million to Settle Lawsuit
Nutramax Laboratories/Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences, Inc., the distributor of Cosequin supplements for pets, has agreed to pay up to $11.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit that charged the company with promoting Cosequin joint supplements for dogs with statements that were not supported with scientific evidence.
(See ConsumerLab’s Review of Joint Health Supplements for Pets, which discusses the evidence for and against ingredients such as glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM for relieving joint pain in pets, as well as our tests of products and Top Picks.)
As part of the settlement agreement, Nutramax also agreed to stop making the claims "Mobility, Cartilage and Joint Health Support," "Supports Mobility for a Healthy Lifestyle," and "Use Cosequin to help your pet Climb stairs, Rise and Jump!" to promote its joint health supplements for dogs. Consumers who purchased Cosequin DS Maximum Strength Chewable Tablets, Cosequin DS Maximum Strength Plus MSM Chewable Tablets, Cosequin Maximum Strength Plus MSM Chewable Tablets, Cosequin with MSM Chewable Tablets, Cosequin DS Maximum Strength Plus MSM Soft Chews, Cosequin Maximum Strength Plus MSM Soft Chews or Cosequin with MSM Soft Chews for personal use between May 3, 2016, and May 6, 2022, are eligible to receive a refund of up to $25 per product, up to a maximum of $150. Consumers who wish to submit a claim must do so by July 21, 2026.
