About ConsumerLab.com

WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK — MAY 19, 2009 — ConsumerLab.com reported today that among twelve magnesium supplements selected for testing, only nine met quality standards. One supplement contained only 45.4% of its labeled amount of magnesium, despite boasting a "GMP" (Good Manufacturing Practices) seal on its label. The same problem was found when ConsumerLab.com tested the product in 2007.  Another supplement provided only 28.8% of its promised magnesium. Lead contamination was discovered in a third product.

According to Nutrition Business Journal, U.S. sales of magnesium supplements reached $271 million in 2007, up 13% from the year before. Magnesium supplements can help prevent migraine headaches, menstrual pain, and magnesium deficiency. Certain forms of magnesium are key ingredients in popular laxatives.

ConsumerLab.com's review of magnesium supplements is available at https://www.consumerlab.com/reviews/magnesium_supplements_review/magnesium/. It includes findings for the twelve products selected by ConsumerLab.com as well as for seven that passed ConsumerLab.com's Voluntary Certification Program.
