White Plains, NY, February 04, 2026 — Red yeast rice can be very effective in lowering elevated levels of cholesterol because it naturally contains cholesterol-lowering lovastatin compounds. However, testing by ConsumerLab.com shows that most red yeast rice supplements provide far too little lovastatin to be effective — and consumers have no way of knowing how much they’re actually getting because amounts of lovastatin are not listed on labels.
Key Findings:
- Considerable differences in potency: Lovastatin content ranged more than 14-fold, from as little as 0.56 mg to as much as 8 mg per typical two-capsule serving. (A daily serving is typically 4 capsules.)
- Most products fell short: Only 2 of 7 red yeast rice supplements tested provided amounts of lovastatin per suggested daily serving shown to significantly lower cholesterol in clinical trials, which is 4.9 to 18 mg per day.
- Cost varied widely: The cost to obtain 10 mg of lovastatin per day ranged from just 31 cents to more than $3.50, depending on the product. Supplements containing very low doses of lovastatin were the most expensive way to obtain it.
- Citrinin not detected: Encouragingly, none of the tested products contained detectable citrinin, a potential kidney toxin that can occur during red yeast rice production, a problem ConsumerLab has found in past tests of other red yeast rice supplements.
ConsumerLab’s Top Picks
Only one of the two products that passed all of ConsumerLab’s tests provided a dose of lovastatin firmly within the effective range and at a reasonably priced price, making it ConsumerLab’s Top Pick.

The Red Yeast Rice Supplements Review includes test results and comparisons for seven red yeast rice supplements selected for testing by ConsumerLab: Designs For Health Red Yeast Rice, HPF Cholestene, Jarrow Formulas Red Yeast Rice + Co-Q10, NOW Red Yeast Rice 600 mg, Swanson Red Yeast Rice, Thorne Choleast-900, Weider Red Yeast Rice Plus.
As explained in the Review, clinical studies show that red yeast rice can lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in people with elevated cholesterol levels when taken daily for at least several months, provided the red yeast rice contains an effective dose of lovastatin compounds. However, like other statins, it can also cause digestive upset, liver and kidney problems, and muscle breakdown. Red yeast rice can also be comparable in cost to generic prescription statins, unlike in prior years, when it was often a less expensive option. The Review also explains the recommended dosage, the best way to take red yeast rice, and potential drug interactions with red yeast rice.
