More Ground Cinnamon Found to Contain Lead

On October 10, 2025, the FDA warned consumers not to consume three brands of ground cinnamon, which were found to contain elevated levels of lead. This brings the total to 16 brands that the agency has included in its public health alert about lead in cinnamon.

(For tests of related products, see ConsumerLab’s Cinnamon Supplements and Spices Review, which includes our Top Picks among ground cinnamon spices.)

Lead exposure, even at very low levels, can cause neurological impairment. In children, this may lead to learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and reduced IQ. Adults may experience abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, changes in blood pressure, or kidney and liver dysfunction. Chronic exposure has been linked to damage to the kidneys, liver, and bones.

Below are the three ground cinnamon products added to the alert:

  • HAETAE Cinnamon Powder (Haitai Inc. USA) was found to contain 4.6 mcg per gram of cinnamon powder (equivalent to 11.5 mcg of lead per teaspoon).
  • Roshni Cinnamon Powder (Singh Trading Inc. DBA Roshni Foods) was found to contain 2.27 mcg/g of lead, equivalent to approximately 5.5 mcg of lead per teaspoon.
  • Durra Ground Cinnamon (Eureka Inc. U.S.A.) was found to contain 2.24 mcg/g of lead, equivalent to approximately 5.6 mcg of lead per teaspoon. (This product was recalled due to lead contamination on October 6, 2025.)

See the FDA’s alert for more details about the products, including lot numbers and “best by” dates.

Consumers who may have purchased any of the affected products should throw them away and consult with a healthcare provider if there is any concern about possible lead exposure, particularly for young children and pregnant individuals.
