Salmonella Outbreak Update: 97 Cases Linked With Moringa Leaf Supplements
On March 17, 2026, the FDA and CDC announced that a joint investigation of a multi-state Salmonella outbreak has concluded. According to the agencies, 97 people in 32 states have been infected with drug-resistant Salmonella strains linked to contaminated moringa leaf powder supplements, including Live it Up-brand Super Greens powders and Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules.
(See ConsumerLab’s article about moringa leaf supplements for information about other recalls of moringa supplements and to learn about the clinical evidence and safety of moringa.)
The investigation found that of the 67 people interviewed, 59 (88%) reported consuming a moringa-containing product — including 55 who reported consuming only Live it Up-brand Super Greens powders, 3 who reported consuming only Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules, and 1 who reported consuming both products. Cases were reported in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. There were 26 hospitalizations and no deaths.
Although the agencies stated that the outbreak is over, and Live it Up-brand Super Greens and Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood have been recalled, the CDC warned that, due to their long shelf life, some people may still have these products at home and urged consumers to throw them away or return them.
Salmonella is an organism that has been linked to fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly adults, and people with weakened immune systems. In healthy adults, Salmonella can produce fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can result in the organism entering the bloodstream and causing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections (e.g., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis. According to the CDC, the Salmonella strain associated with this outbreak is resistant to all first-line and alternative antibiotics typically used to treat Salmonella infections.
