Organic Walnuts Recalled Due to E. Coli Risk
On April 30, 2024, Gibson Farms recalled two lots of Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts due to potential contamination with E. coli (Escherichia coli). According to the CDC, 12 illnesses and 7 hospitalizations have been linked to the consumption of the walnuts, which were sold in bulk bins in food co-ops and natural food stores. Some stores may have also repackaged the walnuts in plastic clamshells or bags.
[Note: ConsumerLab has tested popular brands of walnuts for E. coli and other microbes, toxins, heavy metals, and freshness. Results are in the Shelled Walnuts (Halves & Pieces) Review.]
E. coli is a bacterium that can cause severe stomach cramps, watery or bloody diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and headache. While most people recover within a week, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to get sick from E. coli and their symptoms may be more severe.
Recalled Gibson Farms Organic Light Halves and Pieces products (see product photos) were sold to food co-ops and natural food stores in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. A full list of stores that received the recalled walnuts is available on the FDA’s website. The recalled walnuts can be further identified by the following lot numbers and expirations dates, but be aware these may not be apparent if purchased from a bulk bin, or repackaged by the store:
