Our Members Asked:
Butyrate Supplements for Gut Health: Does butyric acid really work and is it safe?

Answer:
Butyrate supplements are promoted for a wide range of digestive health benefits, from improving overall gut health to decreasing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, as well as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. They are also promoted for improving blood sugar and insulin function, promoting weight/fat loss, and for more general benefits such as decreasing inflammation, boosting the immune system, and increasing energy. Several small preliminary trials suggest potential benefits, but there is not enough evidence to prove that butyrate supplements do all that they promise.

June 01, 2024Despite its possible use as a digestive supplement, when I've used it I find a noticeable increase in gas and bloating. Have other users found this to be the case? (Allergy Research Group ButyrEn Colon Lining Nutrition -- 100 Delayed Release Vegetarian Capsules / ButyraGen™ (Tributyrin Complex) 200 mg)

February 14, 2024I have IBS-D episodes and have found tributyrin very helpful along with low FODMAP diet, eating lactose free yogurt regularly, and stress reduction meditation. I am currently taking the Design for Health tributyrin product, 300 mg of Corebiome tributyrin, 1 per day with breakfast.

May 29, 2022I have been taking Tributyrin-X for several months and found it helped with Microscopic Colitis. I wasn't sure it was helping (I combined it with probiotic supplements and Boswellia extract) till it was unavailable this month in my Amazon subscription. My symptoms definitely got worse over the course of two weeks. I just subscribed directly from the company (Healthy Gut) and am now questioning that, as I have been inundated with emails and suggestions that I order other expensive products. The person writing me seems to be following a script to make money which is a total turn-off. For comparison purposes, I replaced my Amazon subscription for Health Gut Tributyrin-X with one for Designs for Health Tributyrin. I should receive that mid-June and will substitute it for at least two weeks. I didn't try the Healus Complete Biotic Tributyrin Based Butyrate Supplement, because I wondered why they were marketing the delayed release capsule when the benefit of tributyrate over butyric acid is that it will make it to your colon intact. I will report back after my "single subject uncontrolled comparison study!"

May 13, 2022As a Crohn’s disease sufferer I decided, following this article, to try Tributyrate. I bought Tributryn-X. After one month there is slight improvement in my symptoms. I take one capsule TID.
Imagine my surprise to read in the packing slip the required disclaimer that the product “can expose you to chemicals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and/or mercury “ etc., etc., Does anyone at ConsumerLabs have any comment? Is there enough interest in these products to analyze potential levels of these contaminants? I think I will return the refill that just arrived.
I have no financial interest in this or any other supplements.
We are not aware of an issue with heavy metal contamination in butyrate supplements. It is possible that, if you live in California, the seller is adding that information as a general disclaimer on its supplement products to avoid violating California's Prop 65 law should a product exceed the Prop 65 safe harbor levels. For more information, see our article at https://www.consumerlab.com/answers/why-does-my-supplement-have-a-warning-label-from-the-state-of-california/cancer-warning-on-labels/

April 24, 2022I tried butyrate and feel it promoted weight gain despite not having increased caloric intake. This was contrary to what I’d read about it having the opposite effect.

April 03, 2022I started taking tributyrin recently, as a holistic doctor recommended it a year ago and as part of his protocol. I didn’t know what tributyrin did, but I was getting desperate. I was better starting the next day and tested negative for the first time for something I had caught from traveling for the first time in 2 months. Could have also just been a coincidence, but when I stopped taking it I started not feeling as well. I have found it has increased my energy, and my digestive issues are better, though not completely yet as I just started 1 month ago. Definitely worth trying, and I hope they do more studies.

March 29, 2022Just a quick word on bananas, eat them before they ripen if you are looking for a resistant starch.

December 05, 2022Thanks for that info. I'm not familiar with resistant starch but that's good to know. Luckily I like very firm bananas anyway, not soft.
