Young Living Warned for Promoting Essential Oils to Treat Seasonal Allergies, Kidney Stones & More
On June 10, 2022, the FDA issued a warning letter to Young Living Essential Oils Corporate after an inspection of the company’s website and social media found statements about the company’s essential oil and CBD products to be drug claims.
For example, the company’s website promoted its Lemon Essential Oil with statements such as, “…sometimes proves to be as effective as stone-breaking chanca piedra pills for the kidney stones.” and “Use (especially along with lavender and peppermint) to ease those seasonal sniffles and runny noses.” Video images also promoted products such as Frankincense Essential Oil with statements such as “…can help with arthritis…asthma.”
The company was also warned for promoting its CBD products, Nature’s Ultra CBD, for conditions ranging from Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and glaucoma to sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. For example, the company used statements such as “When thinking of emotional wellness…[a] lot of people may think about mental health issues, such as depression or PTSD…[h]ow [c]an it be [i]mproved?…[y]ou can also try to encourage a positive and relaxing atmosphere throughout the day by using your favorite scents or oils! We highly recommend our Cinnamon CBD Oil.”
In addition, the products are misbranded because product labels do not bear adequate directions for intended use.
Young Living Essential Oils Corporate has 15 days to respond to the FDA in writing to explain the specific steps taken to address any and all violations. Failure to properly address violations could result in legal action such as limitation, seizure, and injunction.
