Ground Cumin Recalled Due to Salmonella Risk

On April 20, 2023, Lipari Foods issued a recall of one lot of Lipari branded Ground Cumin Tubs due to the potential presence of Salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism that has been linked to fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly adults, and people with weakened immune systems. In healthy adults, Salmonella can produce fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recall was initiated after the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tested a sample of the products, which tested positive for Salmonella. There are no reported illnesses to date.

Recalled products (see photos) were distributed to retail stores throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Ground Cumin Tubs can be identified by labeling, which states, “Distributed by Lipari Foods,” and by the following:

  • Size: 6 oz tubs
  • Lot #: 220914601
  • Best By: 09/2024
  • UPC: 094776212620

Consumers who have the affected products should not consume it and should return it to the point of purchase.
